薰衣草名乃源自拉丁文lavare，薰衣草有若干种类，主要有安古薰衣草（L.angustifolia），头状薰衣草（L.stoechas），穗状薰衣草（L.spica）。而薰衣草精油是萃取自L.angustifolia，或称L.officinalis（药用 薰衣草）与真正薰衣草L.vera，即荷兰薰衣草。薰衣草精油的颜色从深黄色到深黄绿色不等，香味十分浓郁。精油的成份与品质因气候、土壤与高度有极大的差异。一般认为，法国的 薰衣草比英国的好，比方说，法国薰衣草所含的乙酸芳樟酯比较多，此成份能产生较具水果味的甜
